The name Mutazione did not make me think of a peaceful, but mysterious, island where your sick grandfather is keeping a secret and sending you on tasks to help him. It made me think some mutant science adventure with fighting and scary mutants. However, the first description is what the Apple Arcade app Mutazione, by Die Gute Fabrik is all about.
Yes, there are mutants, but not the scary kind (at least not all of them). In fact most of them are friendly.
Let me back track. In the game you play Kai, a fifteen year old girl, who has gone to the island Mutazione to visit her ailing grandfather. Mutazione is home to a community of mutants that are the ancestors of the survivors of a meteor over one hundred years ago. As I said earlier, these are friendly mutants, who welcome you and help you throughout the game. There is also one creepy mutant who remains a mystery as of this writing and how far I have gotten in the game.
You are on the island to visit your sick grandfather, who seems to know more about the island then he is willing to tell you. There is definitely a mystery to unravel as you play, but there is also a lot of fun to be had as you interact with the inhabitants of the town. You learn about their relationships with each other, and they also lead you through the game with tasks by your grandfather.
Gameplay is very simple. You tap to go to various locations and icons let you know when you can interact with certain items on the screen, including people. The "world" is rather small and you can quickly get from one extreme to the other. The characters you interact with range in shapes and sizes.
One of the things you do as you play is collect seeds for planting a garden. I have had to plant a garden once so far, and it is not as easy as it sounds. The plants have to be placed in the correct spots for the garden to grow correctly.
Mutazione is definitely not the game I was expecting when I started playing it, but I am finding myself really enjoying the game. It feels like I am working my way through a novel and I have to get to the end. I have found times when I don't really know what to do and am clicking around to interact and get a clue, but I still keep playing. I am anxious to see what secret the grandfather is keeping.
I definitely suggest checking it out.
